Interviews with Small Business Owners – Sheryl

Welcome to the school’s portal for Pan Out 2, this area is intended to be an additional resource for all schools participating in the project.
This is a series of cooking demonstrations made by some of our amazing chefs participating on PO2, it was started as direct response to the lockdown because we could not have employers and schools interacting face to face as we would normally. The demonstrations are designed to be used as part of food tech lessons either in school or remotely if students are studying at home.
We have tried to keep the demonstrations ‘short and sweet’ and accessible to a range of cooking ability and ages. However, teachers should view them before to decide if they are at an appropriate level for the year groups they are working with. Using the demonstrations is not just about using the film content but what lessons might be planned around the subject: e.g. baked eggs – a lesson could be developed around the nutritional value of eggs and the various uses in cookery. We are happy to help you develop any lesson ideas if you contact us.
All of the demonstrations have subtitles, safety warnings about hygiene, sharp objects and handling hot or heavy items during cooking.
When schools access these demonstrations as part of their lessons we will require them to complete the appropriate evidence paperwork. Please contact Rinova who will be happy to provide this and talk you through any queries.
There are few films that are devoted to some of our entrepreneurs, who talk about their experiences of setting up and running their own business. Young people often have quite a glamourous of view of what it actually means to be your own boss and here we try to get real people to bust some of those myths about being a business owner.
We developed these guides which have all been endorsed by different PO2 employers. There are currently 3 guides and plan to build on this as the project progresses.
The guides have been written with a view that they can be used by students to widen their knowledge of specific roles within the hospitality sector and find out how to progress from entry level jobs and develop a career in the sector by accessing training opportunities and gaining experience. The guides can also be used by careers advisers as part of planned lessons and by parents to assist them in understanding what opportunities are available in the sector and how and where to find them.
Each guide starts by explaining entry level routes into jobs and also provides links to training providers at various levels including apprenticeships and up to degree level.
The guides explain about various roles within the different types of hospitality providers, some that perhaps people have not considered or realised exist. There is even a section about where to look for jobs and where to get more careers advice.
Each guide ends with a case study of a real person who has developed their career in the hospitality sector.
We would really appreciate your feedback on these guides if you access them.
Each factsheet covers a topic related to food production, cooking, menus or different dietary needs. The factsheets can be used to address the specific topic or related to a wider topic as part of a food tech lesson.
For example, the Afternoon Tea factsheet could be used by way of introduction to face-to-face masterclass in preparing an afternoon tea for an event/lesson and with a view to planning a future meeting to an employer who provides afternoon tea. This way students can get a more rounded view of what this is and why it is such big business in London.
We would really appreciate your feedback on these and how you have used them and what other subjects might be useful for you and your students. Please let us know if there is any support we can provide on supporting or developing your lessons.
